Telavi is the largest town in Kakheti and the gateway to the Alazani Valley, where roughly 70% of Georgia's wine is made. Smaller and more workaday than Sighnaghi (its more touristed neighbour 80 km south), Telavi rewards travellers who want to base themselves somewhere authentic for several days of winery visits.
The town centre is dominated by the 17th-century Batonis Tsikhe fortress and the legendary 800-year-old plane tree on the central square. The surrounding valley is wall-to-wall vineyards: Schuchmann, Tsinandali Estate, and dozens of family qvevri producers all welcome visitors.
