Kutaisi is Georgia's third-largest city, 230 km west of Tbilisi, and was the capital of the Kingdom of Georgia between the 10th and 13th centuries. The old town and the Bagrati Cathedral (UNESCO) sit on either side of the Rioni River; the rest of the city is low-rise and walkable.
For most travellers Kutaisi is also a base — the surrounding Imereti region is full of dramatic karst landscape: the Prometheus Cave with its underground river, the Sataplia dinosaur footprints, and the Okatse and Martvili canyons with their wooden walkways out over the rapids.
