Mtskheta is the oldest city in Georgia (founded around 1000 BC) and was the Kingdom of Iberia's capital from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, when the capital moved to Tbilisi. It is also where Christianity was adopted as the state religion in 337 AD — a moment that still defines Georgian identity 1,700 years later.
Today Mtskheta is a small, walkable town at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, 20 minutes north of Tbilisi. Two UNESCO World Heritage sites anchor it: Jvari Monastery on the hilltop (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the town (11th century). A half-day visit is enough for most travelers; with lunch on the town square, it expands to a relaxed full day.

The 11th-century cathedral that holds the robe of Christ — the burial place of medieval Georgian kings.
The pedestrian center has wine cellars, bakeries selling fresh shotis puri, and craft stalls.

The two rivers visibly mix at different colors below Jvari — a famous photograph spot.
